Graduation cords color meaning

Every school and honor society picks its own cord colors, but some colors show up again and again. Gold is the most common color for academic honors and often stands for a high GPA or Latin honors such as summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude. Silver is often paired with gold for a second honor level. White is used by many service and honor groups, and red, blue, green and purple are often school colors or the colors of a club or honor society. Your school or group will tell you which color you earned.

How many cords can you wear at graduation?

Most schools let you wear every cord you earned, and many graduates wear two or three. Drape each cord around your neck so both ends hang evenly down the front of your gown. Your school sets the rules, so ask your counselor or advisor first.

Want two colors?

If your honor uses two colors, choose a Double Graduation Honor Cord (two cords tied together) or an Intertwined Honor Cord (two or three colors twisted into one).
